The capital of the municipality is distant 46 km from Santander and sea level is to a 46 m average on . It spreads between the coastal stripe and the high places of Moors (219 m) and The Encirclement (223 m). His eventful coast starts of mouth of the creek of Vioña, along with the Flagstone of the Caves, that separates it to the west of Ribamontán to the Sea; it continues for the end of Quintres, which descends to the sea to a 132 m height, y ends in her laugh at Garlic –al this –, principal ecological value of the municipality, recognized like Area of Special Protection for the Birds. The locality is provided with an important architectural patrimony, in the fact that they emphasize the church of St Martin of the XVIIth century, example of lounge plant; the convent of San Ildefonso, founded in 1588 for Alonso de Camino; and the sanctum of San Pedro of Sopoyo. Between notable civil constructions tell themselves the Gothic tower of Barriodeabajo, the tower, palace and corral of Gutters and the house solar of Gutters, ordered to construct for Juan Vélez de Hontanilla in the second half of the XVIth century.
